Throughout our history, different groups have been formed with independent leadership, with support from the Uthando Board and core volunteers.
Some are country town groups who meet consistently to make dolls and perhaps to raise funds at local markets and introduce the project to local schools and seniors’ groups.
Other groups form part of Community Learning Centres. Existing craft groups may choose to make Uthando dolls for a term only. Schools and colleges may take on making dolls for one term, or embed it in their curriculum and repeat it each year.
Groups and school groups work with Uthando from all other countries, sending their dolls directly to TREE in Durban and communicating with emails, reports and photos.

Set up your own group
If you’d like to set up a group, go right ahead. We’re happy to offer tips and suggestions if you need them. Some groups meet weekly, in someone’s home or community location. Others are once-a-month meetings, where dollmakers bring along the dolls they have made during the month.
Keep a photo record (and numbers) of the dolls you make, for your own satisfaction, and for our Facebook page. And let us know how things are going…you can post on our Facebook page,

If there’s no group…
If there’s no one around you to make a group, or you’d rather do your dollmaking independently, do keep in touch with our newsletter and Facebook.
Or if you want to make dolls for your own project…
We know dollmakers who have used Uthando Project principles and adapted our patterns for their own projects in other countries like Cambodia and Ethiopia, as well as in other parts of South Africa. That’s wonderful! Feel very free to do this.
